Chili and soup cook-off to benefit operation Christmas child

Posted on Friday, January 16, 2026  by Austin Dalton

BLAINE – The warmth of good food and the spirit of giving will come together when Lea Springs Baptist Church hosts an Operation Christmas Child chili and soup cook-off on Saturday, January 24, beginning at 5 p.m.

The community event invites home cooks, families and food lovers alike to gather for an evening of friendly competition, fellowship and flavorful dishes, all in support of Operation Christmas Child. Proceeds from the cook-off will help cover shipping costs for shoebox gifts that bring joy and essential items to children in need around the world.

Operation Christmas Child is a global ministry that delivers shoeboxes filled with toys, school supplies and hygiene items to children living in difficult circumstances. Each shoebox represents more than a gift, offering hope, encouragement and a reminder that they are not forgotten.

Participants are welcome to enter a pot of chili or soup at no cost, making the event accessible to anyone who wants to share a favorite recipe or culinary tradition. Those interested in entering a dish may contact Angie Shue at 865-308-0907.

Guests attending the event will have the opportunity to sample a variety of homemade dishes and take part in judging. Voting ballots will be available for purchase at $5 each, with no limit on the number of ballots a guest may buy, allowing attendees to support the cause while cheering on their favorite recipes.

Organizers say the cook-off is about more than just food. It serves as a chance for neighbors to gather, enjoy one another’s company and support a mission that extends far beyond the church walls. Funds raised will directly assist with delivering Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes to children who may be receiving a gift for the first time.

Lea Springs Baptist Church encourages families and individuals from across Grainger County and surrounding communities to attend, whether to compete, judge or simply enjoy an evening of good food and meaningful fellowship.

The event is open to the public and will be held at Lea Springs Baptist Church in Blaine.
