PENSACOLA, FLORIDA – The Grainger High School Lady Grizzly basketball team went to Florida to of course have fun in the sun but also to win games. Turns out, they won them all and brought back a tournament championship.
The Lady Grizzles won their half of the Innisfree Hotels Holiday Classic with wins over Casey County (Kentucky) and Cornerstone Christian Academy (Texas) last week.
In the game against the Casey County Lady Rebels, Grainger used a 19-2 outburst in the first period and that set the tone for the 50-29 win. Brookelyn Roach scored 17 points to lead the Lady Grizz with Adison Hayes adding 10 points.
Grainger took on Cornerstone Christian, a private school from San Antonio, in the finals. That game was a little tougher than the one the day before but the Lady Grizzlies were still able to prevail 59-48. Hayes paced Grainger with 17 points and Roach netted 12 points. They, along with Briley Caldwell, were named to the All-Tournament team.
The Lady Grizzlies will try to ride the momentum of their post-Christmas tournament into the new year when they face Cumberland Gap and South Greene high schools to start the second half of the season this week.
