Lady Pirates earn victories in Maryville

MARYVILLE – The Washburn High School Lady Pirates played in basketball tournament at Maryville Christian School last week and faced two talented opponents. 

In a matchup played Monday, December 29, the Lady Pirates faced the Kachea Lady Wildcats from Kingsport. Washburn earned a one-sided 63-35 victory with Ebany Hill scoring 24 points and Hannah Williams pulling down 18 rebounds. 

The Lady Pirates began strong and ended the first quarter with a 17-8 lead then took a 32-13 advantage into the locker room at halftime. Washburn was again dominate in the third quarter 14-7. The Lady Wildcats came alive for 15 points against the Lady Pirates’ 17 points in the fourth, however, that was too late for a comeback. Williams scored 13 points, Taylie Proffit shot 10 points and Hayden Welch added nine points.

Tuesday, December 30 saw Washburn facing the home team Maryville Christian Lady Eagles. Both teams came to win and began strong with back and forth scoring. The Lady Pirates took the edge in the first quarter with a 23-15 lead behind the scoring of Williams, Proffitt and Hill. 

The Lady Pirates had a 38-24 lead at the break. Third quarter was close with Washburn scoring 19 points and the Lady Eagles earning 13 points. Both teams let off the gas in the fourth quarter with Maryville ahead 5-4. Washburn earned a 61-42 victory to round out a successful tournament.

Williams led with 21 points, followed by Proffitt with 19 points and Hill with 14 points. Williams led again in rebounds with 11, Hill with eight, Abigail Epperson and Proffitt had six each and Amelia King had four.

The Lady Pirates are scheduled to play Hancock County and Cosby high schools this week.
