MORRISTOWN – The City of Morristown Parks and Recreation Department will bring back a favorite community tradition with the return of the Hot Wheels Derby on Saturday, March 7, at the Talley Ward Recreation Center.
The family-friendly event invites racers of all ages to compete in a day of fast-paced fun and friendly competition. Doors will open at 9 a.m., with participant check-in beginning at that time. Races are scheduled to start at 10 a.m.
Participants will race on two different courses including a classic gutter track and a precision timed track. Racers may enter up to three cars in the gutter track competition and one car in the timed track. Awards will be presented to first, second and third place finishers in each age category.
Age divisions include 5 and under, which will feature additional activities, ages 6–12, ages 13–18 and Ol’ Hot Rods for adults.
In addition to racing, adult participants in the Ol’ Hot Rods category are invited to take part in a Classic Car Show by bringing a vintage Hot Wheels car from their personal collection. Classic cars must be displayed in a secure case. Younger racers will vote on their favorites with an award presented for “The Coolest Classic.”
All cars entered in the derby must meet specific requirements. Vehicles must be 1/64 scale to fit track specifications. Cars larger than 1/64 scale will not be able to compete on the timed track. Organizers recommend checking the scale listed on the bottom of the car or on its original packaging prior to race day.
Registration is required with a deadline of March 2. Participants may register by calling the Morristown Parks and Recreation Department at 423-586-0260, by following the registration link available on the City of Morristown Parks and Recreation Facebook page or by emailing Jennifer Gentry at jgentry@mymorristown.com. Early registration is encouraged as the Hot Wheels Derby has consistently drawn strong participation.
