MORRISTOWN — On West Main Street, where storefronts tell stories of the past and community continues to shape the future, a new gathering place is coming together one tile at a time.
Mahj on Main, a private social club devoted to the game of Mahjong, is opening its doors in downtown Morristown and inviting players of all experience levels to pull up a chair, learn the game and enjoy the art of connection. From beginners curious about the rhythm of the tiles to seasoned players eager to sharpen strategy, the club is designed as a welcoming space centered on fellowship, learning and fun.

Located at 179 W. Main St. above the Main Street Christian Bookstore, the clubhouse is accessible from both the historic skywalk and street level. Inside, members will find a thoughtfully designed space meant for conversation, instruction and lively play. Organizers say the setting reflects the spirit of the club itself, elegant yet relaxed and rooted in togetherness.
Mahj on Main is an extension of the community-centered vision behind Gigi’s, a downtown gift shop that has been part of Morristown’s Main Street for more than a decade. Known for its carefully curated selection of home and gift items as well as wedding and baby registries, Gigi’s has long emphasized personal connection and hospitality. The Mahjong club carries that same philosophy into a shared social experience.
While Mahjong is a game with centuries of history, organizers say its appeal remains timeless. The structured play, colorful tiles and evolving strategies encourage focus and creativity while naturally fostering conversation and camaraderie. For many, the club offers more than a game. It offers a place to belong.
Beginning January 5, 2026, Mahj on Main will host regular free-play sessions Mondays from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and Thursdays beginning at 6 p.m. Weekly play times allow members to practice skills, build confidence and develop friendships in a supportive environment.
To ensure a shared foundation at the table, all new players must complete a beginner class before attending free-play sessions. The class covers Mahjong fundamentals and gameplay basics and costs $50. The first beginner class will be held Saturday, January 3, with additional classes available by arrangement during free-play times. Seasoned players are not required to take the course. Club play includes blanks and all jokers.
