TAZEWELL – Adventure will meet the current this spring as paddlers from across the region prepare to take on the scenic waters of the Powell River during the Powell River Kayak & Canoe Regatta on Saturday, April 25, 2026.
Hosted in beautiful Claiborne County, the 12-mile race promises a full day of outdoor excitement, friendly competition and community spirit while supporting the Powell River Blueway Trail, a project of the Claiborne County Chamber of Commerce.
The race will begin at the Well Being Retreat Center, located at 557 Narrows Road in Tazewell, and conclude at Riverside Rentals, 327 N. Riverside Road in Harrogate. Along the way, participants will paddle one of East Tennessee’s most picturesque waterways known for its gentle curves, lush riverbanks and peaceful natural beauty.
Organizers say the regatta is designed for both seasoned racers and recreational paddlers looking for a challenge. Race categories include women’s and men’s single kayak divisions for ages 18-39, 40-59 and 60 and older as well as racing kayaks for ages 18 and older, doubles in canoe or kayak, stand-up paddleboards and a recreational paddle division.
Cash prizes will add a competitive edge to the day with $150 awarded to first-place winners in each category and $50 awarded to second-place finishers.
Entry fees are set at $35 for single participants and $55 for doubles. Those needing equipment may reserve rentals through Riverside Rentals.
Beyond the competition, the regatta serves a larger purpose. Proceeds will benefit the Powell River Blueway Trail which works to promote outdoor recreation, environmental appreciation and economic development throughout the region. By participating, paddlers are not only enjoying a day on the water but also helping strengthen access and awareness of one of the area’s most treasured natural resources.
The event is a joint production of the Claiborne County Chamber of Commerce and the Claiborne County Tourism Commission reflecting a shared commitment to outdoor adventure and community engagement.
