Rutledge BMA advances zoning map updates, awaits state approval on utility contract

RUTLEDGE — The Rutledge Board of Mayor and Aldermen approved the second and final reading of zoning ordinances 164 through 172 on Monday night, completing a long needed update to the city’s official zoning map.

According to city officials, the ordinances do not change any existing zoning classifications. Instead, they correct mapping errors that have accumulated over the years, ensuring the zoning map now matches what has already been in the official books. Several properties, including long established businesses and utility sites, had previously been mislabeled on the map.

City leaders emphasized that the updates will not affect current property use. The action simply aligns the map with the proper zoning that has been in place for decades.

In other business, the board heard an update on a long anticipated water connection project with the LBC Utility District. The emergency interconnection contract has been signed by both parties and sent to the state for final approval.

Once approved by the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, the project will allow Rutledge and LBC Utilities to provide water to one another during emergencies. Officials said the connection will give Rutledge its first true secondary water source, an important safeguard for residents, schools and the nursing home should the primary system ever experience a failure. Construction on the connection is expected to be announced once the state issues approval.
